John has participated in HL7 (an ANSI accredited international standards development organization) since its inception 27 years ago, has participated on its board of directors for 26 years (since HL7 has had a board). He also served as the chair of its Technical Steering Committee (TSC) from 1990 to 2007.
In September 2007 he was named HL7’s CTO. He is responsible for HL7’s activities with ISO TC 215 and the Joint Initiative Council (JIC). In January 2010 he assumed the role of chair of the Standards development Charter Organization (SCO) a now 6 yr. old collaboration among HL7, NCPDP, ASC X12N, ANSI, CDISC ONC, HIMSS, IHE and others to create a forum for cooperation and sharing of technology, architectures and tools among HC SDOs.
John received a BSEE and MSEE degrees from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. He has over 37 years experience in the Healthcare Industry and 41 years experience in the computer industry.
Most recently, he is responsible for communications and discussions between the US Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) and HL7.
