Currently he is professor in the Faculty of Technology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) and director of the Informatics laboratory of the same faculty which is specializing in medical informatics and e-Health.
He is also president of the Greek Center for e-Gov Applications in Social Security and Health (IDIKA). He has also been president and CEO of the Regional Health System (PESY) of Thessaly, director of the Informatics Institute of the Greek Productivity Centre, president of the Greek Computer Society (NG) and vice president of the Greek Medical Informatics Association.
He has taught in several universities in Greece and USA. He has published over 200 articles in international scientific journals and conferences and has also written/contributed in more than 20 books on e-Health and informatics. He has also been involved as project leader / expert in a significant number (more than 50) major international (mostly EU funded) research and development projects, most of them in the area of e-Health. He has also participated as an expert evaluator, after an invitation from the EU, in the evaluation for the selection and progress monitoring of several (more than 20) EU projects and studies.
