Professor Hatzakis is founder and Head of the National Retrovirus Reference Center. He is graduate of Athens University Medical School, MSc on Epidemiology from Harvard School of Public Health, PhD from Athens University Medical School. He obtained his specialty in Internal Medicine at “Hippocration” General Hospital of . His research interests cover epidemiology and preventive medicine, including virology, pathogenesis, prevention and treatment of viral diseases and oncogenic viruses. He is author or coauthor of more than 250 scientific papers published in Journals like Lancet, Journal of JAMA, British Medical Journal, Annals of Internal Medicine, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, Hepatology, Gastroenterology, AIDS, Journal of AIDS, Journal of Infectious Diseases, Antiviral Therapy, Blood, Cancer Research, Pediatrics etc. His work has been cited more than 7.000 times, according to ISI Web of Science. In 2011, the Academy of Athens awarded him with an honorary distinction for his published work. He is member in Greek and International Scientific Societies. He is founder and Chair of the international NGO “Hepatitis B & C Public Policy Association”, located in Luxembourg. He participated in many Executive Committees of private and public sector and the presidency of the Hellenic Center for Disease Control & Prevention.
