Theodore Fotsis, MD, PhD, Professor of Biological Chemistry, Medical School, University of Ioannina & Head of Division of Biomedical Research (Ioannina), Institute of Molecular Biology & Biotechnology (IMBB–‐BR), FORTH.
Dr Fotsis has graduated from the Medical School of the University of Athens and obtained his PhD degree in Helsinki, Finland. He has worked as post–‐doc in University College Galway, Ireland and as a senior scientist in the University of Heidelberg and the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg, Germany. Since 1995, he is a staff member of the Medical School of the University of Ioannina and since 2007 has a joint appointment in the IMBB – BR of FORTH in Ioannina.
He has long-standing experience in the molecular mechanisms of tumour angiogenesis and endothelial cell signaling. Currently he is interested also in stem cell biology and regenerative medicine focusing on regeneration of mesodermal tissues including vessels and ligaments.
He has published 85 papers in peer–‐reviewed journals receiving 7906 citations (7643 w/o self citations) with a h index of 41. He is holder of the Gerhard Domagk – Prize of Oncology, Germany, 1995. He served as representative of Greece in EMBC/EMBL (2004-2010) and in FP7 – HEALTH Committee (2008-2010) and was a member of the National Council of Research and Technology of Greece (2005-2007). Since 2010 he is a member of the National Scientific Council of Biosciences and was recently appointed as National Representative in the Health, demographic change and wellbeing Horizon 2020 committee.
